Jen Smith competed in Nashville, Tennessee, at the Central Regional last weekend finishing 11th overall. And now we know that she was competing on a broken foot. On Tuesday following the competition, an x-ray confirmed that Smith had broken her third metatarsal.
About a week and a half prior to regionals, Smith’s foot began bothering her. In the week leading up to regionals, she had an x-ray to see if it was in fact broken, but the doctor cleared her and said that it could just be soft tissue inflammation.
On Friday, the pain became worse and it continued to get worse over the next two days. In addition, it began to swell. Smith toughened it out and was able to complete all six workouts over the weekend.
Smith is now back in a boot to let her broken foot heal. This is the second time Smith has been in a boot in less than a year. After the 2016 CrossFit Games Smith was in a boot to repair a torn plantar fascia. In talking with Smith, she said that her plantar fascia actually healed great and has not had any pain in that area following rehab.
You can’t control what life throws your way…but you can control how you react. 🌎 — Just a few days before leaving for Nashville I had an X-ray taken of my foot. It started bothering me a little over a week and I knew something was off. I wasn’t sure what was going on, but the X-ray looked fine. No broken bone?! 🤔🙌 I thooought I’d be good to go at Regionals! 🙆💪 Over the weekend it got worse and worse, swelling more and more, and I kept pretending I was fine. 👌🙈 Tuesday morning after Regionals I went for another exam, took another X-ray, and had a broken 3rd metatarsal. 😤🚨🙄 Damn that little bone!! — While this is certainly not the outcome I worked towards all year, I’ll get past it. 😊✌️Here we go again…👢#backintheboot
