This morning Dave Castro revealed that teams will have a 1RM Clean & Jerk Event at this year’s CrossFit Games. The announcement comes less than 12 hours after sharing that individuals will be competing in a one-rep max snatch event.

Again, all we have is that it is a 1RM event along with no other details. The format and timing is still up in the air, like pretty much everything else.

Team event – 1rm clean and jerk

Last year the teams did not have a 1RM event. However, back in 2015, the teams did a 1RM Clean & Jerk. It was two scored events with the total men’s weight counting as one event and the total women’s weight counting as the second event.

2016: No 1RM event
2015: 1RM Clean & Jerk (two scored events – one male total & one female total)
2014: 1RM Deadlift (two scored events – one male total & one female total)
2013: No 1RM event
2012: 2RM Front Squat (two 50 point scored events – one male and one female)
2011: 1RM Clean (all individuals top lift is added up)
2010: No 1RM event

In 2015, CrossFit Mayhem tied CrossFit 417 followed closely by CrossFit Maximus in the men’s event. All three of those teams qualified out of the Central Regional again this year. On the women’s side, the top teams in 2015 did not qualify for the Games in 2017 and those near the top have significantly different rosters.

It is unlikely that we will see the same format from two years ago so it will be interesting to see how Castro mixes things up in Madison.
