Anthony Davis finished 5th in the world during the 2017 CrossFit Open. Heading into the season, however, Timberwolf CrossFit offered Davis a spot on their affiliate team. With the move, Davis dropped out of college to focus solely on the 2017 CrossFit Games season.

But even after his 5th place finish in the world, Davis elected to compete on Timberwolf CrossFit’s team because he would not have been where he would be had they not given him the opportunity to train with them and focus on the sport.

Davis and Timberwolf CrossFit did make it to the CrossFit Games this season finishing 8th in Madison.

But now that the 2017 season is over, Davis is looking towards 2018. In an Instagram post yesterday, Davis said he will be competing as an individual next year with the goal of making it back to the Games. He will be working with Tyler McBride on programming.

Davis’ decision to go team after an amazing performance in the Open is not unprecedented. In 2016, Jamie Greene won the CrossFit Open, but went team on CrossFit Yas. Greene came back the following year and finished 8th at the Games, the best finish among female rookies.

Can Davis do what Greene did? Stay tuned as the 2018 season is quickly approaching.

2017 was definitely one of the most rewarding years of my life. I was given a great opportunity to join Timberwolf CrossFit to build and be apart of a competitive team at the CrossFit games. This opportunity allowed me chase a dream of mine since starting CrossFit. I got to focus on the sport I love the most and got be apart of another great community. I finished 5th worldwide in the CrossFit games Open, our team qualified for the games, and I was apart of the 8th Fittest Affiliate in the world. That opportunity brought a lot of sacrifice and I owe a lot of that success to my amazing team. This team consists of good lord above, my teammates, sponsors, my gym communities- both of them, my friends, family, churches, and all of the supporters that have reached out. ———- I’m happy to announce my team is getting even bigger. Now that the games are done I am going back to the individual side of competition. My goal is to compete at the 2018 CrossFit Games. I am excited to announce I will be working with Tyler McBride (@tatatatylerblue) this year. This is my first year with individualized programming and after talking with him I know this is the best decision for me moving toward my goals. Secondly, I will be working with people I trust deeply and have helped me a lot though the years, @activeliferx. I’m so grateful for all that I have been able to achieve and receive through this sport. I’m excited for the future (might be more surprises). Time to put in the work. #befuhnomenal #2018 #godisgood
