Sean Sweeney Reflects on South Regional, Missing Games

If you were following the men’s competition at the CrossFit South Regional this past weekend you likely heard about Sean Sweeney’s criticism of his judge during Event 2. Sweeney, who started the weekend off with a 6th place finish plummeted down the leaderboard after taking 44th on the dumbbell snatch and ring dip couplet.

Sweeney was able to bounce back after that with a solid Day 2 finishing 4th on Event 3 and 1st on Event 4, moving him back into contention. But the 13 points he received on Event 2 were too much to overcome as he would wind up placing 6th overall and 51 points out of contention. Sweeney would have needed to better his time of 5:46 by two minutes to take 11th on the event to have enough points.

A day after Regionals concluded, Sweeney took to Instagram to share his thoughts on the weekend. Sweeney wrote, “Very bittersweet weekend. I had the best performance of my life this weekend but yet I did not qualify for the @crossfitgames . My placements were 6th,44th,4th,1st,7th, and 14th. Event 2 was simply out of my control. I received an inconceivable amount of no reps that were underserved. If that hadn’t happened I would have qualified but I am not going to dwell on that.

Very bittersweet weekend. Qualifying for the @crossfitgames is not my goal, winning it is. I wasn’t going to win this year anyway so this changes nothing. If anything this adds more fuel to my fire. Next year the goal is to absolutely dominate all the events so even if something like this happens again I still have enough points to qualify. . At the end of the day the only thing that matters is that you know you gave it your all. I am very proud of how I performed this weekend and know where I belong. I am going to take this hit and pick myself right back up with a positive attitude (and my cowboy hat) and grow from this. . I want to thank everyone for the incredible amount of support I have received throughout this weekend and this whole year. @emmbutz for always being my support and partner @cjohnson9598 @sween181 for all the continued support and scheduling this whole trip and a blast of an after party. @tzstrength for being the best damn coach out there @drneratka for keeping me healthy during this whole weekend @beaverfitusa for so much help chasing my dream, making this financially possible and providing me with the best gear possible. . This in not the end of the #crossfitcowboy I’m just getting started. #yeehawbub

We’ve pulled together all of the footage from Event 2 showing Sweeney on the rings. Unfortunately the cameras did not spend much time on him because he wasn’t near the lead. It appears, however, that most of his no reps came from the round of 21.

In the video below, you will see Sweeney near the right side of the screen (Lane 7) get no repped multiple times before cutting away.

Here are a couple of good reps at the end of the round of 15.

The next video shows Sweeney on his set of 9 ring dips. Sweeney is given one no rep, which based on the body language of the judge and the commentator is for not getting enough depth at the bottom of the dip. Sweeney is obviously not happy at this point.
