The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) announced that it has formed a Sport Program Commission. The purpose of the commission is to look into and evaluate “sport innovation opportunities” as well as social inclusion (i.e. transgender and refugee athletes).

On the table are new events, disciplines and formats. In addition, the team will address the recent changes to the 2020 Olympics that were recently handed down by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). In that announcement, the IOC reduced the number of quotas for Olympic Weightlifting in the 2020 Olympics as well as decreased the number of weight categories to 14 (7 male and 7 female).

The Sport Program Commission will meet on September 4-5 and will make its first report to the IWF Executive Board on September 30 – October 1 in Bucharest, Romania.
