The 2024 Northern California Classic, or NCC, wrapped up this weekend. The three-day competition marked the competition’s sixth year and made a new home at Granite Bay Main Beach in Granite Bay, California.

The athletes faced scorching temperatures with all three days of competition reaching triple-digit highs. The heat would knock out several athletes from the competition, including Rafael Sancen who ended up in the hospital with an acute kidney injury due to dehydration. He is recovering and will be okay.

The competition, however, did not disappoint. As expected, the elite men’s division came down to Colten Mertens, Taylor Self and Tudor Magda. Self held a 9-point advantage over Mertens heading into the final event, but Mertens was the only athlete able to finish the final event, Norkalsu.

On the women’s side, Emily Rethwill and Trista Smith were battling at the top most of the weekend, but Elizabeth Wishart snuck into contention late Saturday and then would overtake Smith on the final event with an event win. Smith held onto second place and Carolyne Prevost edged out Rethwill on the final event to take third place overall.

While the competition was not livestreamed, the payouts were quite significant. First place received $25,000. Second took home $5,000 and third place earned $2,500.
