Alexis Johnson and ZA Anderson headed down to Pensacola, Florida this weekend and both walked away the Individual Elite champion. The 2019 Pensacola Beach Brawl (Fall Edition) featured elite, scaled, masters and teen divisions on Friday and Saturday. Teams competed on Sunday.
Johnson, coming off a 6th place finish on Team Don’t Stop at the CrossFit Games, started of strong with two event finishes. The rest of the field, however, would not give up. The top four places would end up being separated by just ONE point!
Chloe Smith, the 16-17 Teen champion at the Games this year, battled back to tie Johnson in points with an event victory in the final event. Behind them, Cassidy Lance-McWherter and Rachel Garibay tied each other one point behind Johnson and Smith.
Johnson’s first two event victories would prove critical as they were enough to break the tiebreak and earn 1st place overall. Smith took 2nd and Lance-McWherter’s two event wins on Saturday bumped her onto the podium above Garibay.
On the men’s side, ZA Anderson returned to competition and fended off Hal Fisher and Hunter Holifield. Anderson finished 10th in the 2013 CrossFit Games, but a string of injuries have kept him on the sidelines throughout the years since.
But this weekend Anderson looked healthy. While Anderson did not win an event, his consistency paid off to hold off Fisher by one point. Fisher was unable to make up for his 7th place finish in the 1RM Snatch event. In third place was Holifield.
All three athletes were able to keep Games veteran Travis Williams off the podium. Williams finished 4th overall after a slow start the first two events.
For their victories, Johnson and Anderson both received $5,000! Here is the link to the full leaderboard.
