CrossFit Games veteran Austin Spencer and two-time Semifinals athlete Katie Calyore stood atop the podium at the 2023 Charlotte Classic. Hosted by CrossFit Charlotte and organized by Taylor Self, the three-day competition put the elite individual athletes through seven scored events.
Spencer, looked strong throughout the weekend never finishing worse than 4th in any event and also took home two 1st place event wins. He held off Andris Sturans and Lee Sharum, both 2023 Semifinals athletes. Sturans took 2nd overall followed by Sharum in 3rd place.
It was the first in-person competition for Spencer following his rookie appearance at the CrossFit Games in 2022. Since that appearance at the Games, Spencer had been dealing with some injuries and is just now feeling healthy again. “Working a full-time job and training for CrossFit just didn’t go well for the 2023 season,” said Spencer. “It’s one of the reasons Caroline and I moved to Virginia recently. I wanted to focus on getting healthy again and really start training for the 2024 CrossFit Games season.”
