Harrison Maurus, only 17 years old, broke his own Youth World Record this weekend at the 2017 IWF World Championships. Maurus clean and jerked 193kg (425 pounds) in the men’s 77kg weight category earning him a bronze medal for the lift.
The lift also broke his current Youth World Record by 1kg, set back in April at the 2017 IWF Youth World Championships. Maurus’ total of 348kg was also good for another bronze medal.
It is the first time in 12 years that an American athlete won a medal at an IWF World Championship event. Kevin Simons, Maurus’ coach said, “This is surreal. I started working with Harrison since he was 10 years old, a little boy. Now one of he’s one of the greatest American weightlifters of his generation.”
Maurus also shattered American Records on the international stage. Maurus set new Youth, Junior and Senior American records in the clean and jerk. He also broke all three records for the total.
