Kate Vibert Takes 2nd, Harrison Maurus Takes 3rd at IWF Junior Worlds

Team USA racked up two more overall medals and five medals total yesterday. Kate Vibert (69kg) took 2nd place while Harrison Maurus (85kg) finished in 3rd.

Vibert, in her first International competition, took 2nd in the snatch, clean & jerk and total after going 5-for-6 on the day. Vibert’s only miss was her final snatch attempt at 104kg. She settled for 100kg. A successful 104kg snatch would have set a new Junior American Record.

On the clean & jerk, Vibert hit 125kg to secure a silver medal for both the lift and the overall total. Hellen Escobar Aguirre missed a 127kg attempt that would have bumped Vibert down to 3rd.

I am incredibly excited about my performance at my first international meet at the 2018 Junior Worlds. I am bringing home 3 shiny silver medals that I received as I cried tears of joy. I narrowly missed making Team USA last year, and the defeat I felt then made me the athlete I am today. Despite any records or PR’s I wanted to achieve at this meet, I am ecstatic my teammates and I have been able to make HISTORY with the amount of hardware we have earned. I am so blessed to be a part of this talented team of athletes that i seriously adore. Maurus started off the competition with a terrible snatch session by missing his 2nd and 3rd attempts. After a successful 151kg first attempt, Maurus was unable to hit 155kg twice, leaving him back in 9th place.

The clean & jerk was another story though. Maurus would go 3-for-3 while his competition faltered by missing most of their 2nd and 3rd attempts. Maurus would end up lifting 198kg for his final attempt, giving him 3rd place for the total, just 1kg ahead of 4th. Maurus would win gold on the clean & jerk.
