CrossFit has just announced a slew of penalties after reviewing video submissions from 20.1. As a new rule this year, CrossFit is reviewing videos from the Top 40 athletes each week and it looks like it will have major implications on the leaderboard.
In total, CrossFit handed out penalties to 26 athletes (on top of Emma McQuaid’s penalties). Seven athletes, including Sam Briggs and Frederik Aegidius, received major penalties for either lack of extension during the ground-to-overheads or single-foot jumps during the burpees.
Sam Briggs had posted a time of 8:01 on 20.1, good for 2nd place worldwide. Briggs, however, received major penalties for both lack of extension during the ground-to-overheads and single-foot jumps during the burpees. She was penalized 2:30 so her time is now 10:31. She fell to 292nd on the leaderboard.
Another 19 athletes received minor penalties for a false start. The official rules state “This workout begins with the barbell on the floor and the athlete standing tall. After the call of “3, 2, 1 … go,” the athlete may pick up the barbell and perform 8 ground-to-overheads then 10 bar-facing burpees for 10 rounds.” (emphasis and coloring to illustrate rule)
Some big names were caught up in the false start penalty. Dani Speegle, Willy Georges, Logan Collins and Meg Reardon were among those penalized.
