This weekend feels a lot like a Regional weekend of year’s past. This weekend is the busiest weekend of the 2019 CrossFit Games season with three Sanctionals taking place. The Down Under CrossFit Championship, Brazil CrossFit Championship and The Rogue Invitational are all taking place this weekend!
The Down Under Championship is Australia’s second Sanctional of the season. The three-day competition is in Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia. Jacob Heppner, Drew Wayman, Jamie Greene, Amanda Barnhart, Tia Wright and Alethea Boon are all in attendance. After Day 1, Luke Fiso and Jamie Greene are on top of the leaderboard. Tia Wright, in 3rd place, is the top athlete who has not yet qualified for the Games.
In Brazil, the only South American Sanctional starts today. The Brazil CrossFit Championship is in São Paulo, Brazil, and features top athletes like Elijah Muhammad, Lucas Parker, Saxon Panchik, Sean Sweeney, Alison Scudds, Mekenzie Riley and Caroline Conners. Follow the leaderboard here.
And in probably the most anticipated Sanctional of the season, the Rogue Invitational kicks off tomorrow in Columbus, Ohio, at Rogue Fitness HQ. The roster of athletes is basically a who’s who in the sport and looks more like the Games line-up than a Sanctional with at least 22 CrossFit Games veterans. Here are just a few of the top athletes competing: Mat Fraser, Patrick Vellner, Lukas Hogberg, Noah Ohlsen, Scott Panchik, Ben Smith, Tia-Clair Toomey, Laura Horvath, Katrin Davidsdottir, Annie Thorisdottir, Brooke Wells and Sara Sigmundsdottir.
Not only are the top athletes competing in Columbus, but the Rogue Invitational also features a Legends competition with some fan favorites from the early days of the CrossFit Games. Athletes like Miko Salo, Dan Bailey, Matt Chan, Jason Khalipa, Chris Spealler, Kristan Clever, Julie Foucher and Annie Sakamoto will take the competition floor.
After this weekend, there are only three Sanctionals remaining to earn an invite to the CrossFit Games. It’s now or never for the athletes on the outside looking in. Stay tuned to The Barbell Spin as we follow all of the Sanctional action.
