If you have been following CrossFit for years, many have wanted (and predicted) to see the bench press appear at Regional or the CrossFit Games. And now it looks like that we will see it at the 2018 CrossFit Regionals.
With a simple caption, “Are you excited to see this at regionals?” alongside a photo of a Rogue Monster Westside Bench, Dave Castro just made the 2018 Regionals real.

The first weekend of Regional action begins in less than two weeks and the workouts will likely begin to be released tomorrow, or at least early this week. Athletes have already been handstand walking up ramps and down stairs, thanks to Castro’s earlier hint. Will we now see every athlete hitting the bench in the coming weeks?
But as we have seen with regional hints, especially last year, overworking a single movement can create problems. Last year, athletes were tearing their pecs in training or on the competition floor. The bench press, another movement that can tear a pec, could lead to more pec injuries this year.
And while this would be the first time the bench press appears at a CrossFit competition, it did make an appearance back in 2012 at the Outlaw Open. The event was programmed by Rudy Nielsen of Outlaw CrossFit. At that time, Danny Nichols bench pressed 385 pounds successfully!
