Could the CrossFit Games Eliminate Regionals in 2019?

Could the 2019 CrossFit Games season not include Regionals? Armen Hammer is reporting that he is hearing rumors that big changes could be coming to the 2019 CrossFit Games season.

According to Armen, the Regional format could be replaced by an online qualifier similar to the Age Group Online Qualifier for teens and masters. Another theory thrown out there is that there could be qualifying events that lead up to the CrossFit Games that earn athletes points – something like golf or NASCAR where the top athletes at the end of the season qualify for the “playoffs”.

Also included in Armen’s video is that CrossFit HQ laid off quite a few members of the media team. Could CrossFit be shifting away from the big production of the CrossFit Games and focusing more on CrossFit Health? CrossFit HQ has poured tons of money into its media arm to promote the CrossFit Games while the health/lifestyle aspect has taken a bit of a backseat.

So while these are just rumors right now, there are definitely changes happening in Santa Cruz, California. How that impacts the 2019 CrossFit Games season or beyond is really anyone’s guess right now. Last year changes to the Regional format was announced at the CrossFit Invitational.
