Dave Castro Reveals Saturday’s Swim and Coliseum Events

After all of the CrossFit Games athletes were introduced at the first ever opening ceremony, Dave Castro called all of the athletes to the Coliseum finish line to announce the swim events for Saturday morning and the Coliseum events that night for the teams and individuals. And of course Castro had a surprise element for the teams.

The Swim

For the Masters and Teen athletes, the athletes will face a fast 500-meter swim in Lake Monona. The race will likely be very similar to the 500m Ocean Swim during the 2016 CrossFit Games.

For individuals, the athletes will swim 500 meters, grab their paddleboard for the next 1,000 meters. After that the athletes will hop out of the water, put on their running shoes and run 2,000 meters back to Alliant Energy Center.

For the teams, the athletes will swim 500 meters individually. Once the entire team finishes their swim they will grab the rescue sled from the 2015 CrossFit Games and swim the same route with the bulky, difficult to manage sled. After that the teams will run the same 2,000 meters back to Alliant Energy Center.

Saturday Night in the Coliseum

Dave Castro announced the team events first for Saturday night (he actually said it was Friday night’s events but later corrected himself after he dismissed the athletes for the night). The event is a combination of two types of couplets featuring snatches and either chest-to-bar pull-ups or bar muscle-ups.

For time, as a relay:
F1 completes 21-15-9 reps of:
55-lb. snatches
Chest-to-bar pull-ups
Then, M1 completes 21-15-9 reps of:
85-lb. snatches
Chest-to-bar pull-ups
Then, F2 completes 12-9-6 reps of:
85-lb. snatches
Bar muscle-ups
Then, M2 completes 12-9-6 reps of:
125-lb. snatches
Bar muscle-ups

Each athlete will complete one of the couplets as a relay. The event is over when the last athlete performs the final bar muscle-up and crosses the finish line.

The individual athletes will do the same two couplet schemes, but they will be two scored events. The first couplet will have a 6-minute time cap. After a 1-minute reset, the second couplet will begin with another 6-minute time cap.

The twist is that the order of the two couplets will be left up to the fans. The vote will take place on the CrossFit Games Facebook page on Saturday from 3-4pm (Central).
