13. That is the number of athletes who have failed an in-competition drug test conducted at the regional competitions this year. Among those five that had qualified to compete at the 2018 CrossFit Games.
Emily Abbott was among those who tested positive for PEDs. Abbott, who finished 1st at the Regional and was set to compete at her 5th consecutive CrossFit Games, tested positive for ibutamoren, an anabolic agent. Because of this, Abbott has received a 4-year sanction that runs through June 2022.
Andrey Ganin was the other individual athlete who tested positive. According to Annie Thorisdottir, her boyfriend Frederik Aegidius has been invitied to compete in his place. Aegidius finished 6th at the Europe Regional.
There were three other team athletes who failed their tests as well. Laura Hosier was on Team East Woodbridge. That team finished 3rd at the East Regional. Hosier had admitted that she had failed her test almost a month ago. Team CrossFit Queens has apparently been invited to compete at the Games in their place.
The other two team athletes who tested positive were Dean Shaw (Meridian Regional – CrossFit Valley Road) and Maria Ceballos (Team Colombia Parceros). It is unclear if CrossFit will invite the next team in line.
