Two-time CrossFit Games champion Katrin Davidsdottir and and two-time CrossFit Games veteran Sean Sweeney traveled to South Africa to compete in the 2019 CrossFit Fittest in Cape Town this past weekend. For their efforts over three days and 10 events, Davidsdottir and Sweeney stood atop the leaderboard as winners of the CrossFit Sanctional in South Africa.
Davidsdottir, competing in her first Sanctional, started off slow with a 10th place finish on the 2nd event, an American Ninja Warrior-style obstacle course. But after that, Davidsdottir was in control with four event wins. Davidsdottir would hold a comfortable lead throughout Day 2 and 3 where she would finish 54 points ahead of Mia Akerlund and Alessandra Pichelli.
On the men’s side, Sean Sweeney made his 2nd Sanctional appearance. Sweeney finished 22nd at Wodapalooza just three weeks ago. This past weekend, however, would show a consistency throughout the 10 events on his way to victory. Sweeney did not win an event all weekend, but did finish with two 2nd place finishes to hold off Cole Sager. Sweeney finished with 780 points, just 18 ahead of Sager. James Newbury, winner of last week’s Australian CrossFit Championship, took 3rd place.
With their wins, Davidsdottir and Sweeney are the 4th pair of men and women to qualify for the 2019 CrossFit Games under the new Sanctional format. In addition, each also earned $60,000 South African Rand, which is equivalent to approximately $4,500 US Dollars.

Teams were also vying for a ticket to the CrossFit Games. With over 83 teams competing, most of which from South Africa, Vondelhym would end up taking the competition win to earn themselves a trip to the 2019 CrossFit Games. Vondelgym consisted of Nienke Van Overveld, Jeremy Reijnders, Sigrid Koolhaas and Sven Verheul. The team would barely hold on to 1st place after SuperHeroProject battled back from over 100 points on the final day to end up just 4 points shy of Vondelgym.
