Most of the news of the changes to the 2019 CrossFit Games have focused on the individuals and team competitions. With the removal of Regionals, introduction of Sanctionals and qualifying directly from the CrossFit Open, there was a lot of discuss. But with the 2019 CrossFit Open just two days away, the stakes have not changed for athletes competing in the Masters and Teen competitions.
For the Age Group division athletes, the top 200 scores at the end of the Open in each division will be invited to compete in the Age Group Online Qualifier (AGOQ) just like last year. There are no other avenues for these athletes to qualify for the Games, no Sanctionals or CrossFit HQ invitations.
But once the AGOQ begins, there are a few changes to the rest of the Games season. This year the Open ranking will not count towards the AGOQ scoring. Instead, all athletes will begin with the same rank.
The AGOQ workouts will be released on May 2 at 5:00pm Pacific Time and athletes will have until May 6 at 5:00pm Pacific Time to submit their scores. Following video review, only the top 10 athletes from each age group will be invited to compete in Madison, Wisconsin at the 2019 CrossFit Games. With only 10 invites this year (last year 20 from each age division were invited), it will be that much more difficult to advance to the final stage of competition.
