Mertens, Hatfield Share Lead at Mayhem Classic after Day 1

The Mayhem Classic kicked off yesterday in Cookeville, Tennessee, with two events. In both events, Burden-ish Run and Heavy Isabel, it came down to seconds between Austin Hatfield and Colten Mertens.

Hatfield held off Mertens by just 0.18 seconds to win Event 1. Then on Event 2, while Gui Malheiros and Nick Mathew took 1st and 2nd, respectively, Mertens gained the edge over Hatfield by just 8 seconds on Heavy Isabel.

With the two close finishes, Mertens and Hatfield are tied atop the men’s leaderboard with 185 points. Malheiros sits in 3rd place with 150, but he is not eligible to earn one of the two invites to the 2025 CrossFit Games since he did not finish inside the top 1% of the CrossFit Open.

The next closest “eligible” athletes are Roman Khrennikov and Jorge Fernandez, both with 145 points.

Two of the favorites heading into the Mayhem Classic, Jayson Hopper and James Sprague, have a lot of work to do on Sunday to get back into contention. Hopper is in 8th place with 125 points while Sprague has 110 points and sits in 11th.

Only two men will earn a qualifying spot to the CrossFit Games.

Day 2

Sunday brings three events. From dumbbell thrusters and legless rope climbs to a Midline March-esque event. And the finale is what we expected – 30 cal Echo Bike, 30 Bar Muscle-Up & 30 cal Echo Bike.

With 60% of the points still up for grabs and three workouts vastly different than what we saw on Saturday, the leaderboard is not set in stone.
