Michele Fumagalli Withdraws From 2018 CrossFit Games After Bike Crash

The fear heading into the 2018 CrossFit Games was the very first event, Crit. A road bike race along the roads around Alliant Energy Center combined with 40 athletes fighting for position had many wondering if there would be a big crash.

Fortunately, there was not a big crash, but there was a single-rider accident on the final lap of the race. Michele Fumagalli appeared to clip the tire of the bike in front of her just 60 yards from the finish line causing her to crash her bike.

Fumagalli ended up with a broken and dislocated wrist, thereby taking her out of the competition. She did, however, run her bike across the finish line to take 26th in the event. Fumagalli withdrew from the competition and did not attempt 30 muscle-ups for time.

The CrossFit Games rookie will stay in Madison for Thursday night’s opening ceremony before heading back to Chicago for a doctor’s appointment. Fumagalli will end up having surgery next week.

Kristin Holte would end up sprinting ahead of Laura Horvath to take 1st on the event. Katrin Davidsdottir took 3rd.
