Sara Sigmundsdottir Dominates Day 2 to Win Strength In Depth

Sara Sigmundsdottir came into the weekend with a lot of pressure to win the CrossFit Strength In Depth Sanctional. Sigmundsdottir showed this weekend that she has her mojo back as she dominated the competition Sunday to take the top spot and earn an invitation to compete at the 2019 CrossFit Games.

Sigmundsdottir led after Day 1 with two event victories, but Jamie Greene and Dani Speegle were in contention heading into Sunday. Questions surrounding Sigmundsdottir’s ability to show consistency throughout an entire competition were quickly dispelled Sunday morning as she easily won Event 5, the first of three events for the day. Greene and Speegle lost considerable growth finishing 4th and 7th, respectively.

Event 6 featured a triplet of Assault Runner, Toes-to-Bar and hex-bar deadlifts. Sigmundsdottir held pace on the run and toes-to-bar and then showed her strength as she quickly moved through the 12 deadlifts each round. Greene was unable to keep up as she took 2nd in the event. Speegle took 5th.

The final event was just a matter of not blowing up for Sigmundsdottir as she held a 38-point advantage over Greene. Sigmundsdottir made light work of the heavy 143-pound thrusters and rope climbs. Fellow Icelander Thuri Helgadottir was the only athlete who was able to better Sigmundsdottir on the final day with a blazing time of 3:27. Sigmundsdottir secured her spot atop the leaderboard with a 2nd place finish.

Jamie Greene and Dani Speegle finished where they started the day in 2nd and 3rd place, respectively. Thuri Helgadottir and Jessica Griffith tied for 4th place.
