[The article has been updated with Sigmundsdottir’s reason for withdrawing.]
Sara Sigmundsdottir has withdrawn from the 2018 CrossFit Games due to a stress fracture in her rib. Sigmundsdottir was in 11th place heading into Saturday night’s events, Bicouplet 1 & 2.
According to Sigmundsdottir, she began experiencing pain in her lower ribs on Wednesday, but it subsided about 10km into the Marathon Row. However, on Friday Sigmundsdottir had to resort to pain killers to deal with the pain during the Speed Clean & Jerk Ladder.
Finally after Chaos and before the Bicouplet 1 & 2, Sigmundsdottir was unable to bend over to pick up the bar for snatches or to even pull herself up on bar muscle-ups. Sigmundsdottir and her coaches then decided it was time to withdraw from the competition.
Sigmundsdottir was seen outside the Alliant Energy Center Coliseum two hours prior to the start of her event. Through nine events, Sigmundsdottir only had three top 10 finishes, 6th in both the Speed Clean & Jerk Ladder and Fibonacci and 10th in the CrossFit Total.
Sigmundsdottir posted this to her Instagram story just before the start of the final events for the night.

As the women lined up for Heat 3 of Bicouplet 2, Sigmundsdottir was missing from lane 5.
This was Sigmundsdottir’s 4th consecutive CrossFit Games. She had finished 3rd, 3rd and 4th the past three years.
