Another event at the 2023 NOBULL CrossFit Games has been announced. After the 5k cross-country run was announced earlier this week, the second part of the Venn diagram was revealed – an Olympic Weightlifting Total.
All athletes in all divisions will take on the 1RM snatch and 1RM clean and jerk at the Games this year.
Age Group & Adaptive Athletes
The Age Group and Adaptive athletes will kick off their competition with the Olympic Weightlifting Total as Event 1 on Tuesday. Athletes in these divisions will have three minutes per lift to establish a 1RM snatch and 1RM clean and jerk.
Teams
For the teams, it will be Event #3 and it will fall on Friday. The Cross-Country 5K will follow this up as Event 4.
The team’s score will be the total of all lifts. In the workout description it says there is a 20 second time cap per lift. If this follows the individual workout description that means each athlete will get two attempts for the snatch and two more attempts for the clean and jerk.
This also appears to suggest that the teams will only face two events on Thursday, the first day of competition for the teams.
Individuals
And for the individuals, the Olympic Weightlifting Total falls on Saturday like the Cross-Country 5K. This means that only the top 30 men and women will get a shot at this event as the first round of cuts take place Friday night.
The Cross-Country 5K is Event 7 and the Olympic Weightlifting Total is Event 9. The final piece of the Venn diagram is gymnastics…so likely Event 8.
Athletes will get two attempts at each lift with a 20 second time cap for each attempt.
Putting It All Together
We now know three events for this year’s CrossFit Games and individuals, age groups and adaptive athletes are all doing them (to some degree). All will do the Cross-Country 5K and the Olympic Weightlifting Total and some ‘variation’ of Helen.
Could we possibly see the trend continue such that all of the age group and adaptive events are a subset and version of what the elite individuals see?
