The Good (and the Bad) of 20.2

The deadline for submitting 20.2 scores was yesterday. While some scores are still popping up as they are validated by the judge, we now have a very good idea of how the second week of the 2020 CrossFit Open shaped up.

Last week, we shared some athletes were lower down the leaderboard that many might have expected. Some of those athletes made their move in Week 2 while others were unable to keep their momentum following 20.1.

Let’s take a look at the Good and the Bad of 20.2:

The Good

Streat Hoerner finished 106th on 20.1, but followed that up with 1,021 reps on 20.2. That would be good enough for 4th in the world this week. Hoerner’s performance moved him up to 30th overall and inside the “Top 20” cut off heading into Week 3. (in case you missed it, Hoerner shared a video of his shoelace coming untied during the last 20 seconds of his first attempt at 20.2. It appears he did a much better job tying his shoes on his 2nd attempt)

Kara Saunders is back! Saunders had her baby just five months ago, but is near the top of the leaderboard. A 27th place finish in Week 1 and a 35th place finish in Week 2 has Saunders in 21st overall and well inside the “Top 20” cut line.

Lefteris Theofanidis, Emma McQuaid keep rolling. Both followed up their 20.1 wins with strong performances in Week 2. Theofanidis had the 3rd most reps this week and retains 1st place in the world after two weeks. McQuaid finished 16th on 20.2 and is now 4th overall.

13 of the Top 20 women from 20.1 remained in the Top 20 after 20.2. From Sara Sigmundsdottir, Kristin Holte and Jamie Greene to Brooke Wells and Emma Chapman. The top of the women’s leaderboard remained mostly intact after the 2nd week.

George Sterner, Ben Smith, Zach Buntin, James Newbury rebound in Week 2. These athletes all finished outside the top 100 on 20.2. Each of these guys finished in the top 50 this week and are now moving up the leaderboard. They all have work to do, but they are still in the hunt.

  Week 1 Week 2 Overall
Ben Smith 175th 15th 63rd
George Sterner 190th 9th 70th
James Newbury 285th 32nd 116th
Zach Buntin 356th 24th 142nd

The Bad

Eight athletes who finished in the Top 50 on 20.1 struggle on 20.2 and now sit outside the Top 100. Colten Mertens, Dillon Cravens, Sigurdur Prastarson, Luka Vunjak, Evander Harewood, Travis Williams, Steven Bidwell and Grigory Gribenyuk will need to bounce back this week to stay in the hunt.

Four of the Top 10 athletes from the 2019 CrossFit Games are on the outside looking in after two weeks. James Newbury, Adrian Mundwiler, Saxon Panchik and Will Moorad will need strong performances the rest of the way in to qualify for the 2020 CrossFit Games via the Open.

Carolyne Prevost drops down the leaderboard. Prevost joined Carol-Ann Reason-Thibault for the CrossFit Atlas Games live announcement on Thursday. Prevost acknowledged that double-unders are not her best movement, especially when in such high volume. Prevost finished with 856 reps, good for 180th worldwide. She sits in 66th overall and is still very much in contention.

Hope Cicero, Taylor Williamson, Alexis Johnson, Hannah Hardy drop out of the top 100. All four athletes started the CrossFit Open with a top 50 performance in Week 1. Hardy fell the furthest going from 35th in Week 1 down to 553rd overall after taking 1,297th on 20.2.
