Tia-Clair Toomey Registers for the Open. Could She Make Quarterfinals?

Tia-Clair Toomey won’t be defending her CrossFit Games title this year…although she did have a brief irrational thought that she might be able to (watch our interview with Tia & Shane). Tia did, however, register for the CrossFit Open again this year and she just finished 23.1.

She posted her video on YouTube (watch below) where she completed 180 reps. She stopped before attempting muscle-ups even though she finished the 30 cleans in 12:06.

The big question, though, is whether Toomey could finish in the top 10% of the Open and qualify for Quarterfinals. And if she does end up qualifying for Quarterfinals, Tia would remain in the top 100 worldwide rankings and potentially help the Oceania region earn an additional qualifying spot to the CrossFit Games.

Toomey’s score of 180 currently puts her at the top 12% of all women’s scores submitted as of Saturday morning according to @mwg_data on Instagram. His data, pulled from the Games leaderboard last night, shows that 180 reps is equal to the top 12% of scores submitted.

Why 12%? Because, according to MWG_Data, “when looking back at last years data we determined that being top 12% Worldwide in each workout was needed to qualify for Quarterfinals.”

Of course, we are only a couple days into the Open and there are a lot more scores left to be input. However, Tia’s score is still likely close enough to be within reach of having a shot at making Quarterfinals (even if that’s not her goal for doing the Open workouts). Whether she could actually pull it off will likely determine one what the remaining two workouts are in the Open.

Right now, Oceania has four female athletes in the top 100 (including Tia, but excluding Kara Saunders), but it does not include Jamie Simmonds who could potentially squeeze into the top 100 after Quarterfinals. If Tia does qualify to Quarterfinals and Simmonds (or someone else) breaks into the top 100, those 5 “votes” inside the top 100 could give Oceania the final unallocated qualifying spot.

It could be an interesting storyline that unfolds over the next two weeks of the CrossFit Open…
