The World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA’s) Executive Committee met last week in Belgrade, Serbia. During the meeting, those in attendance approved the 2027 List of Prohibited Substances and Methods, among other items.
While the 2027 list won’t be published until October, they did confirm that GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide and tirzepatide will not be banned in 2027.
However, WADA did indicate that they will remain in the Monitoring Program while the agency conducts additional scientific studies to determine their impact on athletic performance.
Semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy, was added to WADA’s monitoring list back in 2024. Tirzepatide, the ingredient in Mounjaro, was added this year.
“What we want to see is whether some of the pharmacological impact on human physiology that has been observed in obese patients would also occur in non-obese, highly trained people,” said Olivier Rabin, WADA’s senior director for science and medicine.
Rabin added that the agency wants to see if any potential benefits are offset by side effects like fatigue, nausea or loss of muscle mass.
