On December 20, Sam Briggs will bike 200,000 meters (yes, you read that right) on a BikeErg to raise money for cancer research.
Briggs, 11-time CrossFit Games veteran (includes two Masters CrossFit Games appearances), will set up at Steel Foundry CrossFit in Salford, England, to take on the challenge.
Briggs is looking for others to join her to accumulate at least 20,000,000 total meters to match the 20 million people who are diagnosed with cancer every year.
Every year around Christmas since 2013, Briggs has done a challenge to raise money for charity. This year, however, the charity hits closer to home.
“This year my dad was diagnosed with cancer so I wanted the challenge to be around cancer research,” Briggs told The Barbell Spin. “Then when I was researching I was blown away by the fact 20 million people are diagnosed every year. I knew I wanted to make it bigger and involve the community.”
Briggs added, “So I figured 20 million meters was a great way to recognize the 20 million people diagnosed this year.”
And that’s where we can join Briggs…
To officially get your “seat” and be part of the challenge, head to the Just Giving page that Briggs set up and make a £100 donation. 100% of the funds donated will go to Cancer Research UK.
Once you donate, you will be emailed a password so that you can register on Competition Corner. You can take on the challenge by yourself, as a pair or on a team.
There are some well known athletes already signed up on Competition Corner. Sam Briggs (obviously), Taylor Williamson, Annie Sakamoto, Emma (McQuaid) Wray and Kelly Friel are on the leaderboard.
How long does it take to BikeErg 200,000 meters?
If you’re like me, the question of how long will this take crossed my mind. Let’s just say you can expect to be on the bike for roughly 6-8 hours. This ain’t for the faint of heart…but neither is cancer.
Here’s a handy chart that will give you an idea of how long you’re gonna be in that saddle on December 20th…
