The 2016 Pensacola Beach Brawl didn’t start off as anticipated. Bad weather moved in on Friday preventing the Individual Elite athletes from starting the Triathlon. With Friday cancelled and inclement weather Saturday morning, the workouts were altered for safety and two floater workouts (standing broad jump and handstand hold for time) were added.
Here are the workouts for the Individual Elite division:

Last year’s Men’s Elite winner, Travis Williams, started off strong on the Beach event taking 3rd place, but faltered on the Broad Jump with a 30th place finish. Then with a 9th place finish on the Strength event, Williams was far down the leaderboard in 9th place overall. Williams would comeback, however, ending the day with a 1st and 2nd place finish and moving back up the leaderboard to take 3rd overall.
The story of the day was Aaron Hanna. Hanna took 3rd place last year, but left no doubt that he was out to win the competition this year. Hanna started Saturday off with three 2nd place finishes followed by two 4th place finishes. The consistency gave Hanna a 37-point advantage heading into the final event. Hanna made it a little closer than he would have liked with an 11th place finish on the final event, but it was just enough to hold off Kirk Gibson in 2nd place.
For the Women’s Elite competition, two CrossFit Games veterans, Alexis Johnson and Cassidy Lance, were on the podium. However, the woman at the top of the podium was Nicole Corey out of CrossFit 404. Corey started off a little slow with a 9th place finish on the Beach event and a 6th place finish on the Standing Broad Jump. But after that, Corey never finished outside the top 3 and had two event wins to edge out Johnson by two points.
Johnson was consistent throughout the entire day with her worst finish coming during the Beach event finishing 6th. The same was true for Lance as she took 14th in the first event setting herself back early on. Both athletes’ consistency was enough to get them on the podium, but were a little too late to catch newcomer Corey.
Last year’s winner, Lauren Herrera (Truzkowski) took 4th place overall.
