Alex Vigneault has made it to the CrossFit Games the last two years and was one of the favorites to qualify for the Games out of the East Regional. But late yesterday afternoon the CrossFit Photo Journal Instagram account (@crossfitphotojournal) shared that Vigneault has a partial pec tear and that he said he is “5%” likely to be able to compete.

Vigneault suffered the injury on the last round of ring dips during a test run of Event 2 (21-15-9 of DB Snatches and Ring Dips). The plan is to test ring dips this morning and if they don’t go well, Vigneault will play it safe, withdraw and look to make a comeback in 2018.

Here is video of the injury:

The injury also affects Vigneault’s career outside of CrossFit. Vigneault is in the process of training to be a police officer and the injury will put that on hold.

For the rest of the men’s field in the East, Vigneault’s injury likely opens the door for a lot of names fighting for five spots. Will we see someone new take Vigneault’s place this year or will one of the Games veterans (Jordan Cook, Lucas Parker, etc) take advantage.

We will soon find out as individual Men’s Event 1 in the East begins at 12:30pm Eastern.
