Today, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) announced that it will uphold the Olympic ban placed on the Bulgarian Weightlifting Federation (BWF) by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF). The IWF banned the BWF from competing in the Rio Olympics and fined it $500,000 USD in November. The BWF appealed the decision in December and the case went to arbitration.
While the CAS felt the IWF President did not have the authority to make the decision alone, the IWF regulations specifically outline that the Executive Board should take action in such a case. Because of this, the CAS stood by the decision to ban the BWF from the 2016 Olympics, but removed the fine.
