It’s hard to believe that the first installment of the new USAW American Open Series is here. The 2016 American Open feels like it just happened. For the next three days, athletes are in Reno, Nevada, competing at the 2017 USA Weightlifting American Open Series 1.
The American Open Series is new in 2017 and is comprised of three events leading up to the American Open Finals in December. While participation in the Open Series is not a requirement to compete at the Finals, points are awarded for each Series event and the American Open Series Champion will be awarded at the conclusion of the American Open Finals.
While many of the big names have elected to skip the first installment of the Series, athletes like Colin Burns and Olympic medalist Sarah Robles will be competing. Other national-level lifers hitting the platform this weekend include Donovan Ford, Cortney Batchelor, Caitlin Hogan, Alyssa Ritchey, Kathleen Winters, Megan Seegert, Mary Peck, Amy Hay, Sam Poeth and Alexandria Ludwig.
