Brent Fikowski, Sara Sigmundsdottir Win Dubai CrossFit Championship

After four days of competition, Brent Fikowski and Sara Sigmundsdottir have won the 2019 Dubai CrossFit Championship (DCC). For Sigmundsdottir, it is her second consecutive Sanctional win. For Fikowski, it solidifies his return ticket to the CrossFit Games. And not only that, both athletes will leave Dubai with $50,000 in prize money.

The 2020 season has been a good one for Sigmundsdottir. The 5-time Games veteran from Iceland has won the Open again this year and last month she won the first Sanctional of the season, the CrossFit Filthy 150. And now Sigmundsdottir has done it again, this time against a stronger field.

Sigmundsdottir took on Games veterans through the week like Jamie Greene, Sam Briggs, Alessandra Pichelli, Karin Frey, Gabriela Migala. Sigmundsdottir’s worst finish was Event 3, a scored event paired with Event 2. Event 3 was the time of the slowest 1k bike during the three rounds of Event 2. While she finished 6th in the workout, her slowest 1k bike time was only good for 10th.

That didn’t stop Sigmundsdottir, however, as she rattled off two event victories and five more top 3 finishes. Karin Frey took 2nd place with Sam Briggs rounding off the podium in 3rd.

For Briggs, both Sigmundsdottir and Frey have already qualified for the Games via the Open. Thus, Briggs had the highest finish among those who have not yet qualified and will be Dubai’s invitee to the Games.

Final Standings
1) Sara Sigmundsdottir – 967
2) Karin Frey – 941
3) Sam Briggs – 924
4) Gabriela Migala – 882
5) Jamie Greene – 877

On the men’s side, Fikowski had yet to qualify for the Games. Fikowski sits in 32nd overall, four places behind the final Top 20 qualifying spot. While three athletes will likely go team (Brandon Luckett, Rich Froning, Roy Gamboa), it would have still left Fikowski outside the Top 20 qualifying spot.

With the win at Dubai, Fikowski has guaranteed a return trip to the Games. Fikowski overcame an 18th place finish on Event 5, a 10-round workout of 5 unbroken Ring Muscle-ups and a 10-meter unbroken handstand walk. Fikowski finished the competition with two 1st place finishes and three top 3 finishes to overcome Roman Khrennikov and hold off fellow Canadian Pat Vellner.

Final Standings
1) Brent Fikowski – 949
2) Pat Vellner – 922
3) Roman Khrennikov – 913
4) Bjorgvin Gudmundsson – 818
5) Lazar Dukic – 799

If Fikowski does end up above the blue line and finishes in the Top 20 in the Open, the Dubai invite will go to the 9th place finisher, Tola Morakinyo.
