Peter Ellis & Maddie Sturt Win the 2023 Down Under Championship

From the first event win to the final event, the top of the men’s and women’s leaderboard at the 2023 Down Under Championship never changed. Peter Ellis and Maddie Sturt both won Event 1 on Friday and never looked back.  Neither Ellis or Sturt relinquished the lead throughout the weekend on their way to the top of the podium Sunday afternoon.

Peter Ellis finished with two event victories and never finished worse than 7th place. Ellis would take the overall title by a comfortable 80-point margin over Zane Shellabear-Healey. Zac Thomas slid into 3rd place after beating Jonathan Dunlop on both parts of Double Grace.

For Maddie Sturt, the defending champ started off with two quick event victories and then maintained consistency the rest of the weekend to secure back-to-back Down Under Championships. She was able to hold off Anikha Greer who steadily worked her way up the leaderboard over the weekend. Greer would finish in 2nd overall ahead of Grace Walton in 3rd.

As for the Jake Douglas and Emily de Rooy, the only two individual athletes in the field from the 2023 CrossFit Games, Douglas withdrew with a back injury after the first event on Friday while de Rooy ended up finishing 9th overall.

On the team competition, Team Frog Grips and California Gurls would earn the men’s and women’s elite team title, respectively. Jay Crouch, Royce Dunne and Bayley Martin never finished worse than third in any event to secure the victory for Team Frog Grips. As for California Gurls, it was a close race as they entered Sunday in a deadlock for points with Nexletica Gold. However, the girls from Invictus pulled away with two event victories to take the women’s title.
