2019 CrossFit Games Masters Recap

While much of the focus this weekend has been centered around the individual and team competitions, the best Masters athletes in the world were also battling it out in the Age Group divisions. In the 35-39 divisions, there were seven CrossFit Games veterans in the field (Kyle Kasperbauer withdrew with a calf injury).

But regardless of whether these athletes had competed as an individual at the Games, these Masters athletes are the real deal! To illustrate this, Nick Urankar did not have the biggest 2-Rep Overhead Squat of the Masters. That distinction went to David Levey in the 40-44 year-old division. Levey lifted 310 pounds…twice!

On the women’s side Michelle Suozzi (40-44) hit 215 pounds for two in the overhead squat, just five pounds short of Games veterans Anna Tobias and Becca Miller Voigt.

And to show how competitive the Masters divisions were, Urankar only won four of the eight events. Urankar finished 20th as an individual at last year’s Games. In the Men’s 50-54 division, just 10 points separated all the athletes on the podium. In fact, 1st place was decided by a tiebreaker, in which Joes Ames came out on top. In the Men’s 60+ division, three-time defending champ David Hippensteel finished 6th.
