Registration for the 2020 CrossFit Open has closed with the submission deadline for 20.1. And for the second consecutive Open, the number of participants has declined. The 2020 CrossFit Open had just 239,106 registrations.
This is down over 119,000, or 33%, from the 2019 CrossFit Open, just 8 months ago.
As mentioned earlier, the 2020 CrossFit Open is the second year to see a decline in participation. In 2018, over 429,000 people completed a workout in the Open. Prior to the last two Opens, participation had been growing every year since 2011.
And while the Open participation is declining, the Open is now even more important when it comes to qualifying for the CrossFit Games. The National Champion of each country (last year there were 236) and the “Top 20” all qualify directly to the CrossFit Games. In addition, 12 Sanctional events are using the Open as the online qualifier and primary source of fielding the Sanctionals.
