348 Athletes Receive Penalty Following Video Review of Workout 1

[Update: Original article published the morning of April 25 had 265 penalties handed out. As of Friday morning (4/26), the count is up to 348 penalties.]

The Quarterfinals leaderboard looks substantially different than it did 24 hours ago. Last night, CrossFit began imposing penalties to athletes following video review of Workout 1 of Quarterfinals. Athletes’ scores were being adjusted in real-time while we were live on The Spin with big names like Tia-Clair Toomey-Orr, Brooke Wells, Pat Vellner getting bumped down the leaderboard.

According to data pulled by Mike Halpin of Known & Knowable, 122 men and 143 women have received a scoring adjustment on Workout 1 as of Thursday morning (and I’m hearing more might be coming). As of Friday morning, 164 men and 184 women have received a penalty on Workout 1.

Those penalties hit some of the biggest names in the sport. Tia-Clair Toomey-Orr, Pat Vellner, Lazar Djukic, Paige Powers, Brooke Wells, Sydney Wells and more had their scores changed following video review.

For Toomey-Orr and Vellner, the penalty moved them down the leaderboard but still within a qualifying spot for Semifinals. But not everyone was so fortunate.

Paige Powers, Sydney Wells, Ella Wilkinson, Luis Oscar Mora were among 48 athletes who were in a qualifying spot (top 40) and are now outside the top 40 and are in jeopardy of not advancing to the next stage of competition due to an assessed penalty.

Powers was originally in 5th place in the North America East region, but after her score was adjusted from 209 reps to 168, she dropped to 104th in the region and well outside a qualifying spot. Wells also dropped from 24th to 141st after her Workout 1 score was adjusted from 218 reps to 165.

The tables below show the athletes who were inside the top 40 and poised to advance to Quarterfinals and now, following a penalty, are outside the cut line:
