Earlier this week we reported that Katie Trombetta had failed her drug test while competing at the CrossFit Games. Trombetta shared the news before CrossFit’s official announcement.
This afternoon, just hours before the start of the 2020 CrossFit Open, CrossFit announced seven athletes failed drug tests, including 9th place finisher, Anna Fragkou.
Four men and three women, five of which competed at the CrossFit Games, tested positive for banned substances during the season.
- Anna Fragkou (9th at 2019 CFG). Tested positive for a metabolite of oral turinabol (4-chloro-18-nor-17β-hydroxymethyl,17α-methyl-5α-androst-13-en-3α-ol) on August 2, 2019. Four year suspension.
- Katie Trombetta (44th at 2019 CFG). Tested positive for metabolites of GW1516 and ostarine on July 29, 2019. Four year suspension.
- Hylie Thompson (4th in Masters 55-59 division at 2019 CFG). Tested positive for GW1516 sulfoxide and GW1516 sulfone, metabolites of GW1516 on August 4, 2019. Four year suspension.
- Franky Wood (87th at 2019 CFG). Tested positive for 3-hydroxy-4-methoxytamoxifen, a metabolite of tamoxifen on July 29, 2019. Four year suspension.
- Achilleas Pantazis (126th at 2019 CFG). Tested positive for GW1516 sulfoxide and GW1516 sulfone, metabolites of GW1516 on July 29, 2019. Two year suspension due to a contaminated supplement.
- Mauro Acevedo (3rd ranked in Argentina after 2019 CrossFit Open). Tested positive for oral turinabol and its metabolite 6β-OH-Dehydrochloromethyltestosterone on August 19, 2019, at the FitLand Fitness Festival. Four year suspension.
- Juan Sforzini (16th ranked in Argentina after 2019 CrossFit Open). Tested positive for stanozolol metabolites (4β-hydroxystanozolol and 16β-hydroxystanozolol) on August 19, 2019, at the FitLand Fitness Festival. Four year suspension.
Fragkou, a rookie at the CrossFit Games, was the National Champion of Greece in 2019. Fragkou made it into the top 10 and competed throughout the entire weekend. Fragkou’s placement will be removed, meaning Thuri Helgadottir will move into 9th place overall. Danielle Brandon will move into 10th and Emma McQuaid will move into the top 20 and receive prize money.
All of the athletes received a four year suspension except Pantazis. Pantazis proved that a pre-workout supplement was tainted after testing was conducted by NSF International. Pantazis received a reduced suspension, similar to Kelli Holm’s suspension last year.
According to discussions with several athletes, CrossFit had not yet paid out prize money to the athletes. It appears that CrossFit was withholding payments until all of the appeals processes had concluded and an official announcement had been made.
