The Age Group Semifinals are just over a week away and CrossFit has shared some details with the athletes. The Barbell Spin has seen the email sent to athletes yesterday and there are some interesting takeaways. Let’s take a look…
Test Details & Floor Plans to be Released on Monday, April 24
Similar to Quarterfinals, the floor plans will be released on Monday, April 24 at 12pm Pacific Time. But rather than waiting until the start of the competition to release the workout test details, they will also be released at the same time as the floor plans. So everyone will know the tests four days ahead of the start of the competition.
However, athletes will not be able to officially complete the tests until Friday, April 28, at 12pm Pacific time. That’s because…
Passwords Will be Required for the Tests
On Friday, April 28, at 12pm Pacific Time, the Age Group Semifinals officially begin. At that same time, CrossFit will email the athletes competing the passwords needed to do Tests 1 and 2.
That means the athletes will need to say a password at the start of their video for each Test to confirm they are doing the workout during the 24-hour window.
The passwords for Tests 3 and 4 will be emailed to athletes on Saturday, April 29 and 12pm Pacific Time.
There are Two Scoring Tables
Unlike the Open and Quarterfinals where 1st place in an event gets 1 point, 2nd place gets 2 points and so on, the Age Group Semifinals will be scored similar to that of the in-person Semifinals and the CrossFit Games. That is, 1st place will receive the maximum points for the event, generally 100 points but in some cases the maximum score is 50.
In the email sent to athletes, CrossFit shares that there are two scoring tables for the Age Group Semifinals – the standard 100 point maximum table and the 50 point scoring table.
The 50 point scoring table has generally been used at CrossFit competitions for shorter or skill-based tests. An example would be the 2016 CrossFit Games where the Handstand Walk and Suicide Sprint events were back-to-back and were each scored on a 50-point scoring table.
While the email sent to the athletes does not specify how the 50-point scoring table could be used, with only four tests outlined, one of those is likely to be a two-part skills test. Last year, there were six workouts for a total maximum score of 600.
This year, could we see multiple two-part tests such that there are still six scored events?
Scoring Tables
The 100-point scoring table is the same as what was used for last year’s Age Group Semifinal. In that, there was a 4-point gap for each place from 1st to 13th and then every place below 13th was a 3-point gap…down to 1 point for 30th place.
On the 50-point scoring table, there is a 2-point gap from 1st to 20th place. From there, every place receives one less point with last place getting 2 points. (note: it is interesting that last place in the 50-point scoring table receives more points than in the 100-point scoring table)
