Athletes Gear Up For Granite Games and The CrossFit Lowlands Throwdown

Two of the last three Sanctional events of the 2019 CrossFit Games season are this weekend. In the United States the Granite Games kick off on Thursday, May 30, in St. Cloud, Minnestota. In the Netherlands, the CrossFit Lowlands Throwdown starts on Friday, May 31.

With only three Sanctionals remaining before the CrossFit Games, that means only three more men, women and teams have the opportunity to earn an invite to compete in Madison this August. And for those in the States, the Granite Games is the last Sanctional on U.S. soil.

So unless one of the remaining unqualified athletes gets the at-large invite (like Hunter McIntyre), athletes like Ben Smith, Ben Stoneberg, Alison Scudds, and Colleen Fotsch will need to win the Granite Games this weekend to continue their season.

The Granite Games is Smith’s last attempt at qualifying for his 11th consecutive CrossFit Games appearance. Two weeks ago, Smith finished 14th at the Rogue Invitational.

As for the CrossFit Lowlands Throwdown, the final athlete roster has yet to be released. Based on the qualifier, Tim Paulson and John Coltey both qualified. Coltey has confirmed he is making the trip to the Netherlands. No word on Paulson yet. On the women’s side, the top online qualifiers are “Regional” level athletes versus Games veterans. Of course, several athletes could have been invited, but, if so, no details have been announced.
