Brooke Wells started off the 2019 CrossFit Games with a bang. Wells took 20th in Event 1 and followed that up with a 2nd place finish on Event 2 to end Thursday in the top 10. She came out on Friday with three more solid performances highlighted by a 7th place finish in Mary.
But then Saturday morning came. Wells started the day in the top 10. With the Sprint Course on tap, a three round elimination-style event, all Wells needed to do was finish in the top half of the field in the first run to stay in the top 10 and advance to the next event.
Wells did that on her first run, crossing the finish line in 28.77 seconds. That time would have been good enough for 10th place. But, Wells was assessed a 10-second penalty for stepping on the yellow while going around one of the pylons near the finish line.
The penalty dropped her to 20th place, a difference of at least 50 points. Wells could have gained even more points with a better performance in the second round.
Instead, the 5 points earned from the event dropped her down to 16th and out of the top 10. Only the top 10 athletes moved on to compete the rest of the weekend.
Wells reacted to the situation by saying she was “heartbroken.” Wells continued by saying, “It’s been a hard pill to swallow that the only time I fell out of the top 10 was also the only time it mattered. But I’m accepting it & moving on. I’ll be back.”
