The 2020 CanWest CrossFit Championship will have a very distinct Canadian flair. While the Canadian-based Sanctional will have its own online qualifier later in the season, it has been announced that the top 20 men and women in the CrossFit Open from Canada will receive an invite to compete at the CanWest CrossFit Championship in June.
The announcement is the first of its kind. It is the first time a Sanctional has set aside spots to compete based on citizenship.
The CanWest CrossFit Championship will ultimately have 45 men and women competing for an invite to the CrossFit Games. The remaining spots will be filled via the online qualifier and the winners of the Fraser Valley Throwdown.
The Fraser Valley Throwdown is a three-day competition on November 22-24 in Abbotsford, British Columbia.
For those looking to qualify via the Open, athletes will need register for the CrossFit Open and select Canada as their home country. The top athletes at the end of the Open will have to submit proof of Canadian citizenship and video submission of all the Open workouts.
In 2019, Jean-Simon Roy-Lemaire and Carol-Ann Reason-Thibault were atop the Canadian leaderboard during the Open. There were 9 Canadian athletes to compete in the individual competition at the CrossFit Games.
