Last week we reported that a member of CrossFit FBDV Mayhem Africa had failed a drug test. It was later confirmed by CrossFit that Angelique Connoway had tested positive for metabolites of GW501516, a banned substance. CrossFit had also confirmed that an appeal was underway.
This afternoon, a member of Cape CrossFit Wolfpack has told The Barbell Spin that their team has received an invitation to compete at the CrossFit Games. Cape CrossFit Wolfpack placed 2nd overall at the REBEL Renegade Games, host of the Africa Semifinal.
It is unclear whether CrossFit has concluded its review of Connoway’s appeal or if a final ruling has been made. At the time of this publication, CrossFit has not publicly sanctioned Connoway.
Last year no team from Africa made it to Madison to compete at the 2022 NOBULL CrossFit Games after the top two teams both had members who tested positive for banned substances. However, that did not come without controversy as CrossFit admitted to clerical errors in processing the drug test samples.
A request to CrossFit for comment was not immediately returned.
