Castro’s 20.2 Clue…Grass?

Is the grass always greener on the other side? Dave Castro, CrossFit Games Director, released his second cryptic photo clue of the 2020 Games season, and it couldn’t be simpler: grass.

Several commenters are guessing squats for the classic “ass to grass” idiom. Others, like 2019 Games rookie Chandler Smith, have a more philosophical take.

“This picture contains many many blades of grass. This grass may look like many different plants, but they are actually genetically identical. The shared heritage of these blades of grass means that there is an element of repetition across the organisms in the picture. This obviously means that we will see a repeat workout this week, as we have every open. But the sheer amount of grass here gives the real hint, that being the FACT that this will be the first non final multiple Open repeat. 20.2 is 19.2 is 16.2. The jury rests,” Smith’s comment said.

While Open workouts are never truly predictable (and Castro’s “clues” never truly insightful), there are a couple movements that seem more likely than others to show up in the next four weeks. Deadlifts were absent from the 2019 Open for the first in six years , so expect this fundamental movement to make a resurgence in 2020. Ring muscle ups are also a popular guess from many athletes on Instagram, as they did not show up earlier this year. Box jumps haven’t been seen since 17.1 when they were part of the posterior-heavy dumbbell snatch and burpee box jump-over couplet.
