Last week it was reported that Jay Crouch received a one-minute penalty on Workout 1 of Quarterfinals. That penalty knocked Crouch from 1st place overall to 38th overall. Dave Castro, in this week’s Week in Review, spent the first nine minutes to address the situation.
Castro said that the news of Crouch’s penalty caused a lot of commotion on social media and that he received plenty of DMs criticizing the harshness of the penalty.

In addition to the one missed rep, which Castro confirmed, he said that Crouch technically edited his video submission by adding a timer overlay. Castro then read from the CrossFit Games rulebook detailing how an athlete can be penalized in this situation.
Castro then gave some of the rationale behind the one minute penalty. He felt that a few second penalty where he would still finish in the top 5 and receive prize money was not correct. He also said they considered giving Crouch a score of ‘0’ but Castro said that was too harsh as Crouch’s season would have been over.
Instead, they settled on one minute where he would not receive prize money but could advance to the next stage of the season.
Despite the penalty, Crouch will still be able to compete at Torian Pro to attempt to qualify for the 2026 CrossFit Games. Should he not finish in the top 3 he can take on the Online Semifinals in June.
