Did the French Throwdown Reveal the Dates of the 2025 CrossFit Open?

Earlier this month organizers of the French Throwdown announced the dates and new venue for the 2025 competition. Since then, the French Throwdown website has been updated and it appears to have possibly given some hints to what the 2025 CrossFit Open and Games season could look like!

On the Competitions page of the French Throwdown website, it lists all of the divisions along with a brief description of each. The French Throwdown has always been a community-driven competition that also included elite competition.

Last year, that continued along with hosting the European Semifinal for the CrossFit Games season.

For all divisions, including elite individuals and teams, the dates of the “Qualifier Phase” are February 15-24, 2025. Are these the dates of the 2025 CrossFit Open???

In Drunk Pedro’s rumors of the 2025 CrossFit Games season, he says the Open is going to be in February and that there would be some sort of in-person Sanctionals.

The French Throwdown’s qualifier just happens to be in February and the French Throwdown used to be a Sanctional in 2019 and hosted last year’s Semifinal.

No competition, even unaffiliated with CrossFit, would host an online qualifier at the same time (or even a week or two before) as the CrossFit Open. 

This leads me to believe that the format of the 2025 CrossFit Open is changing to a 10-day online qualifier where those competing will have to complete a series of workouts within that time period. Gone is the three-week Open.

The French Throwdown website also states that 40 places are available for elite individuals and elite teams. To me, it looks like athletes will have to register for the CrossFit Open and could then advance to the French Throwdown (or another Sanctional-like competition around the world…such as Torian Pro, Syndicate Crown, etc).

This all makes sense if it’s accurate that 20 athletes will advance directly to the CrossFit Games from the online portion of the season, leaving the remaining 20 spots to come from these Sanctionals.

This would likely mean that only a couple spots are available from each Sanctional compared to the 9+ from the larger Semifinals the past several years.

As for registration, that opens on December 1, 2024. There are registration links on the French Throwdown website, but they are currently not working. They are likely waiting on the official announcement from the CrossFit Games team regarding the 2025 CrossFit Games season.
