Fraser, Toomey Start Saturday Strong, But Can They Hold On?

Saturday morning of the 2018 CrossFit Games put the athletes in the water for the first time all week. The Swim, Paddleboard and Run chipper was the first time the athletes had ever faced a water event on the weekend of the CrossFit Games.

Tia-Clair Toomey and Mat Fraser were both able to extend their leads. Toomey made her move on the paddleboard, but Kristi Eramo kept pace. On the run, Toomey and Eramo ran side-by-side just like last year’s Run-Swim-Run event. Toomey ultimately pulled away in the final several hundred meters.

Laura Horvath, Annie Thorisdottir and Katrin Davidsdottir all had good finishes, but it was not as good as Toomey’s 100 points.

On the men’s side, the Australians dominated early on the swim and paddleboard. Dean Linder-Leighton pulled away from the pack on the paddleboard and would never look back. Fellow Australians James Newbury and Khan Porter also pushed the pace on the paddleboard, but Brent Fikowski would catch Newbury and Porter on the run and out sprint Newbury for 2nd place.

Fraser would make his comeback on the run to finish 4th and pull away from Lukas Hogberg and Patrick Vellner. Both Hogberg and Vellner struggled on the paddleboard portion as they would end up taking 23rd and 21st, respectively.

Then this afternoon Dave Castro announced Chaos 30 minutes prior to the start of the event. Well, Castro kind of announced the event. In a surprise twist, the athletes would take the field of the North Park Stadium without knowing what they would be doing. The athletes would not know the rep schemes even once on the field as the judges would only tell them when they were done with each segment.

Ultimately, the athletes would complete the following:

35 / 30-cal. SkiErg
30 / 25 burpees to bar
45 / 40 single-arm OHS, 50 / 35-lb. DB
40 / 45 single-leg squats
25 box jump-overs, 42 / 36-in. box
110-ft. tumbler pull, 400 / 300 lb.

Katrin Davidsdottir and Patrick Vellner would win the event, but Toomey and Fraser held pace taking 3rd and 9th, respectively.

Toomey holds a 106-point lead over Laura Horvath. Katrin Davidsdottir is in 3rd place.

Mat Fraser leads Lukas Hogberg by 78 points while Brent Fikowski hold 3rd place.

There are two more scored events remaining tonight in the Bicouplet 1 & 2 events. The events will be back-to-back with a one-minute reset between them. There is still plenty of time to catch Toomey and Fraser, but it will need to happen tonight.

The women’s Bicouplet events start at 6pm Central tonight.
