Mat Fraser, Noah Ohlsen Among 40 Athletes to Receive Penalties After 20.2 Video Review

Last week 26 athletes received penalties after CrossFit HQ reviewed video submissions of 20.1. Late last night CrossFit announced the next batch of penalties after reviewing videos from 20.2.

In total, 40 athletes were assessed a penalty…including some of the biggest names in the sport.

Nine athletes had their score adjusted in some fashion. Of those, Noah Ohlsen and Mat Fraser were the most recognized athletes. Ohlsen lost 7 reps because he did not complete the required number of double-unders while Mat Fraser counted an exra toes-to-bar rep after the 20-minute time cap had ended [correction: this article has been corrected as only one rep was counted after the time cap. The original article mentioned “several” and was misstated]. The scoring adjustments had minimal impact to their overall score as Fraser sits in 4th overall and Ohlsen is just one place behind in 5th.

Simon Mantyla received the only major penalty on 20.2. Mantyla was assessed a major penalty for “consistent lack of depth and lockout on thrusters.” After the scoring adjustment, Mantyla’s rank on 20.2 is 1,776th in the world. He sits in 434th overall. He also dropped on Sweden’s leaderboard down to 8th place.

Here is the list of athletes who received scoring adjustments:

  • Lefteris Theofanidis: scoring adjustment for false start and heels not breaking the vertical plane on toes-to-bar
  • Noah Ohlsen: adjusted score from 980 to 973 for rounds where he did not complete the required number of double-unders
  • Mathew Fraser: adjusted score for final toes-to-bar after time cap
  • Simon Mäntylä: major penalty for consistent lack of depth and lockout on thrusters
  • Chandler Smith: score adjusted from 922 to 898 because in 24 of 27 rounds, he performed only 23 double-unders
  • Kristi Eramo O’Connell: adjusted score from 954 to 946 for rounds where she did not complete the required number of double-unders
  • Karin Freyova: score adjustment for final thruster performed after the time cap
  • Katelin Van Zyl: score adjustment for last 4 double-unders performed after time cap
  • Kristine Best: score adjustment for completing only 23 double-unders one round

On top of scoring adjustments for miscounted reps or failure to meet movement standards, there were also 33 penalties for false starts, almost double from the 18 on 20.1. Here are the list of athletes who started a little too early this week.
