Yesterday, the individual athletes faced three events along with three cuts, taking the field from 50 to start the day down to 20. With a cut after every event, the stakes were high for those facing elimination on the next event.
One of the stories you may have missed is one of Matt McLeod. The winner of the Down Under CrossFit Championship, McLeod started in 47th on Friday morning and now heading into Saturday, McLead is in 9th place.
McLeod finishing in 18th on Ruck, the first event of the day to move into the top 40. From there, McLeod made his move. McLeod crushed the Sprint Couplet in 1:27 for his first career CrossFit Games event victory. McLeod followed that up with 622 reps on Mary, good for 5th place.
And with that, McLeod now is in 9th place.
Saturday begins with the Sprint Course. The top 10 athletes after this event will advance to the rest of the competition. For McLeod, a strong performance this morning could solidify a great comeback.
McLeod has 316 points in 9th place. But the margin for error is slim. Cole Sager is in 11th place and just 13 points behind McLeod. For McLeod, Sager and the rest of the athletes fighting for a top 10 spot it will be imperative to finish strong on Saturday morning.
