James Newbury and Maddie Sturt have already earned their spot in the CrossFit Games as individuals. But this weekend, the two Games veterans joined up with Rob Forte and Kate Gordon on the X-Terminators team at the Down Under CrossFit Championship.
The newly formed team showed their dominance by beating the already qualified Project X team to win the team competition and earn an invite to the CrossFit Games.
The Down Under CrossFit Championship was Forte’s second attempt to get back to the CrossFit Games on a team. Back in January, Forte teamed up with Jay Crouch, Katelin van Zyl and Madison Tatt. That team finished in 3rd place behind Project X and Torian Black.
But with two individual athletes competing on the X-Terminators, the roster at the CrossFit Games will look much different. James Newbury has confirmed with The Barbell Spin that he will indeed compete as an individual at the 2019 CrossFit Games and we expect the same for Sturt. That means Forte will need to find two athletes to back fill their roster.
Madison Tatt is likely going to replace Sturt as she was on last year’s Reebok CrossFit Frankston’s Games team alongside Forte. The men’s replacement might be a little more difficult. Crouch would have been the shoe-in to replace Newbury, but he ended up qualifying as an individual this weekend by finishing 3rd at the Down Under CrossFit Championship. Don’t be surprised if we see a former Games athlete like Zeke Grove or Mitch Sinnamon taking the final roster spot.
