With the 2024 CrossFit Semifinals just one week away, CrossFit released its updated worldwide rankings, and with that, the number of qualifying spots that will advance from each Semifinal. This is the second year that the worldwide ranking-based system has been used to determine how many athletes from each region will advance to the CrossFit Games.
However, the methodology was tweaked this year, resulting in some unexpected changes. On The Spin this past week, Adrian Bozman shared that only the athletes who were competing in the individual Semifinals would count in the D’Hondt Method calculation.
This is a departure from using the top 100 in the worldwide rankings after Quarterfinals where athletes in the top 100 could have moved to the team division in the current year, or in the case of athletes like Paige Powers, Sydney Wells and Nick Mathew did not qualify for individual Semifinals this season.

The change, it appears, has significantly benefited the smaller regions. Oceania, Asia and South America each saw increases in the number of athletes qualifying for the 2024 CrossFit Games. Africa, while close, was unable to get a second qualifying spot in either the men’s or women’s division.
So how many athletes qualify from each Semifinal?
Men
For the men, Oceania and South America each gained an additional qualifying spot in 2024. Those spots were taken from North America East and Europe, both of which are down one qualifying spot from last year.
 | 2023 | 2024 |
NA East | 12 | 11 |
NA West | 9 | 9 |
Europe | 11 | 10 |
Oceania | 3 | 4 |
Asia | 2 | 2 |
South America | 2 | 3 |
Africa | 1 | 1 |
Total | 40 | 40 |
Women
A similar movement in allocations occurred in the women’s division. For the women, Oceania, Asia and South America each gained an additional qualifying spot. One less woman from Europe will advance and two less women from the North America West Semifinal will qualify for the Games.
 | 2023 | 2024 |
NA East | 11 | 11 |
NA West | 10 | 8 |
Europe | 11 | 10 |
Oceania | 3 | 4 |
Asia | 2 | 3 |
South America | 2 | 3 |
Africa | 1 | 1 |
Total | 40 | 40 |
Heading into the Semifinals, many were expecting Europe to possibly gain an additional qualifying spot to the CrossFit Games. This was driven by how well both the men and women of Europe stacked up against the rest of the world in Quarterfinals. However, given the two-year lookback in the worldwide rankings combined with removing team and non-Semifinal qualified athletes, the smaller regions were able to get enough athletes into the calculation to earn additional spots at the expense of the Big 3 regions.
Teams?
Teams do not follow the same D’Hondt Method calculation, nor do they utilize worldwide rankings for the number of teams advancing to the CrossFit Games. Instead, their allocations are set before the season starts. With only 30 teams competing at the 2024 CrossFit Games, here is the allocation by region:
 | 2023 | 2024 |
NA East | 10 | 8 |
NA West | 10 | 7 |
Europe | 10 | 8 |
Oceania | 3 | 3 |
Asia | 2 | 1 |
South America | 2 | 2 |
Africa | 1 | 1 |
Total | 38 | 30 |
